Why You Need More Than “Just a Quick Headshot"
Boss Ladies, I have a question for you. Why is it when you know you need to update photos for your business, you immediately devalue and marginalize the experience?
That is exactly what you're doing when you say “I just need a quick headshot" or "I just need one to two photos for my LinkedIn profile”.
Girl, let's be real. In this day and time there is a lot more being demanded up of us if we truly want to build an empire. We are the face of our developing empire and that gorgeous mug needs to be posted EVERYWHERE!
I get it. Many women haven't had a great experience with a professional photographer in the past. So I am not surprised when I also hear, “I have never had a good photo taken of me.”
Guess what, babe. The two mind sets: "I just need a quick photo" and "I've never had a good photo", are connected.
I am here to tell you that you need MORE than a just headshot and MORE than a linkedin profile. And it is called Personal Branding.
Personal Branding Photography Matters
My way of supporting female entrepreneurs is much more valuable than one headshot. There is POWER in a personal brand that is completely lost in “just a headshot”.
A personal brand photo communicates, commands and sells. It attracts a target audience because it puts on display the personality, power, and capability of the person in the photo -- and therefore the business. And MOST importantly, personal branding tells a story.
“Marketing is no longer about the stuff you make, but about the stories you tell” - Seth Godin
Yep. I gotta agree with Seth on this one. Personal Branding is what you can use to tell your story and market the eff outta your service, product and messege.

The Importance of Investing in Yourself
So... you are scaling your business. You’re a couple years in and you’re growing. You are outsourcing the major business tasks: accounting, website, lawyer for contracts. But is there a line item for personal branding?
Listen, sis you know the importance of investing in your business. Personal branding is part of that investment. Don’t skimp here. Build yourself a catalogue of engaging branding imagery that is going to level up your business as a whole.
And I promise, you are going to WANT more material to put into rotation than you think. Let’s break down the math:
- You’ll need 1-2 “money” shots for your About page on your website, your profile photo on your email, Facebook, Instagram Pinterest and LinkedIn… And those can stick around for 6 months to 2 years. If you want to update these every 6 months, you’ll need to increase the number of options you are working with.
- For social media feeds, it is recommended you do a weekly introduction to engage new followers and reconnect with longtime networks. There are 52 weeks in a year, right? So even if you recycled some of your introduction posts and photos, you still need a big enough pool to pull from to keep it fresh. For the sake of this article, let’s go with 26 photos.
- Email marketing is another area to consider. You can use those introduction photos that you are also using for your social media feeds, but you will likely need product photos, flat lays and detail photos to illustrate your email newsletter messages and articles. Let’s estimate that you put out 2 email newsletters per month. You may find yourself needing 15-24 more photos for the year.
Phew…that’s more than you thought, right? Like I said, in this day and time there is a lot more being demanded up of us if we truly want to build an empire.
