It is truly a brave thing to decide to make a career change. In fact, it is so scary that some people don't go for their dreams in spite of hating their current career or job. Life is a bit too short to be spending so much of it doing things you don't love. Thinking of jumping ship from everything you are comfortable and maybe even really good at, is totally crazy, right? Except that it could mean that you find happiness in ways you never thought possible and feel more fulfilled then ever before. It is not without its own stress, heart break and instability, but it is very cool to find yourself in the position to reinvent yourself.
I too have been there. My previous career was a very demanding one in public relations and marketing. I worked long hours and endured a tremendous amount of stress. I wasn't happy though. Busy, yes. But not happy and sadly I confused the two for a long time. But then two major changes occurred in my life. The first was having my daughter. (There is nothing like motherhood to change your priorities.) The second was moving from Florida to a city I could barely locate on the map - Milwaukee. (Nothing like not knowing a soul in a new place to change your focus.) It was exciting and scary. I went from long days and lots of stress to not knowing what was in store for me. And I realized that what was in store for me was totally and completely up to me. Truly it was all along, but it took detaching and being in a position of taking a look around and inside myself to figure that out. I found my way into a new career -- photography. I found new confidence, new friends and a new outlook on life. I embraced change and it took me to new heights within myself.
My story is probably not that unique. Many people brave this kind of shift. However common, whenever I hear a similar story, I am still so amazed, proud and most of all -- happy for that person. My good friend, Becky is embarking on her own adventure reinventing herself. After 15 years serving as a lawyer for an electric company, Becky realized there was more for her out there. But she didn't know what that was. The universe delivered her a new opportunity shortly after making her decision to see what was out there. Now she will be serving as general counsel for a sports marketing company and managing a meaningful charitable foundation for none other then Donald Driver as part of her job.
I am beyond thrilled for Becky and cannot wait to see her grow in her new position and find the happiness and balance she is longing for. To celebrate her new adventure, Becky decided she needed new head shot photos and I was honored to take those for her. We had a great session in the studio...where I think we chatted and laughed way too much! But we did get some beautiful photos to share.
